The health and wellbeing of transgender and gender non-conforming people of colour in the United States: A systematic literature search and review
Transgender and gender non-conforming people, or TGNC, are those who feel different about their gender than what was decided for them when they were born. They face unique challenges, especially when it comes to their health and happiness. If these individuals are also People of Colour (POC), they face added discrimination due to their race and often also because of their gender or sexuality.
To better understand the health and happiness of TGNC people of color, we looked into scientific articles published from January 2010 to May 2020. Out of 3,575 articles, 76 were directly relevant. From these, we found that there are main areas of research: physical health and mental wellbeing. We also discovered factors that can harm or improve their health and wellbeing. Based on our findings, we suggest better ways to help and study this group in the future.
