Columbia Psychiatry - Addressing Mental Health in the Black Community
About 37 million people in the U.S. identify as Black or African American. This article highlights how mental health is crucial for overall well-being. Sadly, Black Americans face higher rates of conditions like anxiety and depression. This is due to limited access to culturally sensitive mental health care, everyday experiences of prejudice and racism, and past injustices from the medical field. Given the multiple challenges of racism, classism, and health disparities that the Black community faces, their mental health concerns are intensified and largely unaddressed. Other struggles, such as economic challenges, exposure to violence, and experiences with the criminal justice system, further worsen these mental health disparities.
